The Highway Code and adverse weather conditions

In the Highway Code there are warnings about adverse weather conditions and how to drive safely.

The first thing to do is use your car headlights when the visibility is not clear. If you cannot see further then one hundred metres in front of you, use your fog lights but remember to switch them off when you can see clearly again.

Wet weather is the first hazard we will look at. Tyres need to be in good condition as worn tyres will not grip well in wet weather.

The stopping distance between you and the car in front of you should be double your normal stopping distance as required by the rules of the Highway Code.

Keeping your distance from the car in front gives you an advantage of seeing the road ahead and able to plan quickly if any accident occurs.

If you feel your cars steering is not manoeuvring well, carefully slow down as you may have water in the treads of your tyres.

Puddles of diesel on the road could cause an accident as the surface will be slippery.

Watch out for other road users or pedestrians as they may have trouble in the bad conditions and not able to respond well.
