I learn to drive comfortably under the guidance of affinity driving schoolMy first experience with Suresh Dharmarajan as my driving instructor with Affinity Driving School removed any doubts from my mind whether I would be able to learn to drive. Although professionalism is practised throughout he still manages to make you feel comfortable, confident and motivated to learn and move on to the next skill required to pass the driving test. If you're new to Britain, our roads can look intimidating. You're not used to the attitude of British drivers, the rules of the road, or the volume of traffic. And you've probably never driven on the left before.
But don't worry, it's easy to find some friendly tuition that will soon have you driving with the confidence of a home-grown Brit.
Accident rates among non-UK drivers are high, not because they're less good drivers, but simply because they are unfamiliar with British roads. To tackle the problem, the government brought in new rules in April 2009 which mean that overseas drivers could be liable for on-the-spot fines of up to £900.
Whichever way you look at it, it makes sense to drive safely. At Affinity, our overseas driving tuition teaches you the rules and the etiquette of driving in Britain. It makes you a safer driver.
Even if you're not planning to stay long in the UK, an overseas driving course will give you the confidence to drive on the left; negotiate Britain's roundabout network; and watch out for bus lanes, red routes, congestion zones, and parking restrictions. How much tuition you need depends on your level of confidence, where you come from, and how long you've been in Britain.
Drivers from the European Union and the European Economic Area are fully licensed to drive in the UK. Drivers from anywhere else will have to exchange their licence for a UK driving licence if they want to drive on British roads for more than 12 months. Many of those non-EU drivers will also have to take a UK driving test – ideally within 12 months of arriving in the UK.
To find out if you have to take a UK driving test, call the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) on 0870 240 0009 several months before your 12-months have elapsed. If you do have to take a test, we can help you prepare for it well in advance of your 12-month deadline.
If you fail to meet the 12-month deadline, you will have to apply for a provisional driving licence, which means you can't drive unless accompanied by someone else who does hold a full UK driving licence.
Wherever you come from, you'll find a warm welcome at Affinity. We're here to help you drive more confidently and more safely on British roads. Call us today on 0800 511 8800, and you'll soon be feeling as much at home in the UK as we do.
