“Ivan was more of a coach and mentor than an instructor”After having a bad experience with another instructor, I met Ivan Flanagan who was patient, understanding and methodical in his approach to instructing me. Having a full time job Ivan was always flexible with timings of lessons and on a number of occasions it was close on 19:30 when we completed. What I liked most about Ivan was his approach and teaching style; he was more of coach and mentor then an instructor. Always talking through manoeuvres, via the use of diagrams prior to doing them which was a massive help. And after every lesson Ivan wanted feedback from me on how I felt the lesson went and what I felt we needed to focus on at our next lessons ‘’after which Ivan would give his feedback’’, which built my confidence. Confidence is what you need to pass your test and that is what Ivan instills in you. Jay Carneiro, Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey |

Affinity Driving School recommends the following circuit for carrying out turns and emerging at T-junctions:
Begin on Emmanuel Road, turn left on to Glenfield Road and then emerge right on to Burnbury Road. Continue along to the end of this road where you can emerge left on to the Radbourne Road. The next left will take you on to Midmoor Road, at the end of which you can emerge left on to Haverhill Road. From here you can turn back on to Emmanuel Road. This circuit provides a tried and tested method for allowing you to practice steering, MSPSL and peep and creep techniques.
When two cars meet and yet there is only room for one to pass, this is known as meeting traffic. The body language of the other car is key to knowing how to proceed. Practice in Ravenslea Road to gain a good understanding of this.
Atkins Road, Weir Road, Clarence Avenue and Thornton Road meet at a roundabout where the student can gain a good understanding of how to negotiate and cross them safely. Priorities, positioning and the appropriate signals to use can be practiced here.
Balham High Road has plenty of crossings from which the student can gain experience on how to negotiate them correctly.
The corner of Thornton Road and Parkthorne Road provides a good place to carry out reversing around a corner. Also the corner of Radbourne Road and Hydethorpe Road is suitable. A turn in the road can be practiced on Radbourne Road, and parallel parking is possible in Copthorne Avenue.
